    Pembroke Branches Out

Diversity. Smells of food in the air. “Celebrities”. Students. Children. Elders. All these things and people played a important and fun role in the four-hour annual event in what most people know as Pembroke Day. Pembroke Day is, more specifically, a day for the business community, the people of the town of Pembroke, and the University campus population to come together to extend greetings to each other and socialize in celebration of fall and the new school year.

Out on the lawn of the Lowry Bell tower “Quad” between Livermore Library, and Old Main free souvenirs, door prizes and, often times, food samples are given; The display of many exhibition tables from businesses within the community and even from student organizations on the campus of UNC Pembroke were also present during the four-hour event.

It’s very overwhelming to try and take in all of the festivities that occurred in such a small amount of time. However, catching a glimpse of “THE” Colonel Sanders would be hard to miss. Yes, Mr. Colonel Sanders of KFC was there (of course, an imitation) walking around greeting students, children, and the citizens of the Pembroke community. “Make sure you stay in school, get a good education, and of course come get some lunch at KFC when you get hungry” said the Colonel, with a friendly wink, to sophomore Breanna Milligan.

Located next to the Colonel and KFC, was the involvement table for the student organization, Relay For Life. The young individuals involved in the organization were handing out fliers and were also recruiting new members to their team to help pull off the successful annual Relay For Life event on the campus of UNCP.

Pembroke Day is Pembroke’s way of bringing their community together, as well as the college community. It has continued to be a huge success for the town every year, and has a promising future.

Growing up in her small hometown of Bennett, NC, Samantha Langley always knew that she wanted to get out of her small town and for see other opportunities that awaited her. As a person that appreciates diversity, Samantha felt that her hometown was not big enough for her interests and bright personality.

When the time came to come to college, Samantha admitted that the transition from a small town and tight knit school, to a larger school, much less a university, was rather difficult. Although moving to Pembroke for school came with it’s challenges, Samantha loves being here. To help her transition a bit easier, she thought it would be a great idea to get involved, and join a club or two to allow her to become more comfortable in the new town.

As she toured from table to table at an involvement fair that UNCP was hosting, the Honors College really appealed to Samantha. What she really liked about the Honors College is that it is a “living, learning community” where she feels a sense of belonging. In her club, she holds a position as Public Relations Manager, which is responsible for getting the club involved in other organizations. To help better her position, Samantha wants to plan more events, and expand to other outside organizations on campus with the Honors College.

Samantha enjoys her PR position with the Honors College because of her genuine interest in public relations, which happens to be her major, along with journalism. She loves to write and edit writing, which explains why she is also the Assistant Editor with UNCP’s school newspaper, The Pine Needle.

Although Samantha is a bit of a busy body, it is very important for her to study, and keep her grades up, not only for herself but also for her third organization, Lambda Sigma. Lambda Sigma specializes in service projects, and consists of only the top 10 percent of the freshman class. With that being said, being a productive and studious student is essential to Samantha’s success here at UNCP. With her charming and bubbly personality, Samantha has a promising educational career at Pembroke.
